INT. HOUSE - MIDDAY
The room is dark and dusty, the old potter, IDO, sits at his desk, face in hand staring at a half finished Kantharos vase.

Bread crumbs cover his desk from a previous meal, the floor is strewn with broken pots and his bed is unmade and dishevelled.

There is a loud bang as the door swings open, a large wealthy patrician, AMOS, fills the doorway.

AMOS
Ido! I need a vase

IDO
What kind?

AMOS scans the room his eyes settling on the Kantharos vase and he points with authority
AMOS
That vase. But with me on
the front eh?

AMOS strikes an exaggerated pose IDO’s eyes are distant as he stares through the vase in front of him

AMOS
If you can’t I’ll find a
potter to live here who can

IDO
(Shakes and nods his head)
No, I-i-i can do it

IDO closes his eyes, the unfinished Kantharos vase sits on the desk

AMOS
You’re spose to be the best!

IDO
S-sorry, please I beg you,
give me another chance!

AMOS HUMPHS and turns his back leaving the room

AMOS
One more chance

Their hands together form a shape on the wheel

INT. HOUSE – EVENING

IDO smiles and admires the finished vase on the wheel.

FADE TO BLACK:
INT. SYMPOSIUM – EVENING
Lavish curtains cover the walls. A platter of grapes and bread is spread across a table and we can hear AMOS talking as the Kantharos comes into view, silhouette of AMOS is painted on the side

AMOS
… and that was how I defeated
the Great Tobius, saving each
of your miserable lives! So in
my honour I toast that we may
continue to live as kings!

AMOS’s hand reaches for the vase and grasps the handles. He holds the vase to his lips and drinks its contents, wine slipping down his chins.
Finishing the wine AMOS lets out a sigh and throws the vase.
It falls in slow motion to the ground and shatters into pieces. IDO is beside it broken pieces in his hands.
IDO’s face is shocked and distraught, until one piece stands out to him, it still holds the silhouette of AMOS.
We end on IDO’s face as he smiles to himself and closes his eyes.

BDM125 Five Stages of Grief

I am researching the five stages of grief that IDO will go through with the death of his wife, so far he experiences denial, anger, and depression. The end of the animation will be Ido's acceptance stage.

BDM126 Ido development

I originally had Ido at four heads high, however, i could not get the body looking how I imagined him so tried to develop him three heads high. I like this body shape as it is toned like a working class man would be and his shoulders slumping also suggest he is over worked. I have also changed his eyes again which portrays his age better

BDM125 Treatment

Working Title: Ido
By Madilyn Davidson
Logline: “A potter’s art, a potters life, a patrician's will is a potter’s strife.”

Being a potter was once a revered position in Athens, as plebeians and patricians alike marveled over their art and skill. However, times change and the select few are replaced by hundreds. A lonesome potter named Ido trained by Klietias himself can attest to these hardships. Finding food to eat each day becomes an underlying focus. Until one day he is approached by a notable patrician in the market for a vase like no other. The patrician requests a Katharos vase to be made in his image which throws Ido back to a past that he was yearning to forget.

A master potter at heart, he is unable to turn down the offer. Ido begins to make the vase, however he is emotionally disconnected and cannot find the skills he spent a lifetime perfecting. He stays awake all night and eventually turns out an acceptable Katharos. When the patrician returns he is disappointed in Ido for he had heard tales of his skill as a potter, he turns away in disgust and Ido is left grovelling at his knees for another chance. This time Ido must confront his past in order to move forward. We are sent back in time to where Ido is crafting a kantaros vase with his wife, he is teaching her the techniques and as Ido smiles we are back in the present, with a completed vase before him on the wheel.

Ido is invited to attend the patrician’s symposium. As he enters the vase sits on a mantle in all its glory and splendour. The patrician makes a wonderful speech about his own greatness and toasts his guests with the kantaros vase; he finishes the wine and throws the vase to the ground. It shatters into a thousand pieces. Ido’s face is blank apart from the twitch of an eye.

Animation Study- Monsterbox

Monsterbox (2012) , France
Directors: Ludo Gavillet, Colin Jean-saunier, Lucas Hudson, Derya Kocaurlu
Studio: Bellecour Ecoles D'Art
Awards: Nominated for Golden Slipper- Best Animation Film

The short film Monsterbox is a charming story about the friendship between an older man and a young girl who find comfort in each others loneliness. This animation appealed to me as the use of emotions to portray the characters feeling was inspiring. Without dialogue the mood was expressed through the change in music and the character developments. In the opening scene of 'Monsterbox' we meet the two main characters, an old man who owns a garden shop and a young girl with an unusual pet. The old man seems rough to begin with but as we watch he begins to open up as he finds joy in making the little girl smile. Act one shows us the beauty of their friendship as both characters treasure each others company and the bonsai tree is introduced as an important part of the mans life. As the animation continues the mans bonsai blooms much like the friendship. The climax of the film is when the old man realizes that his new friend is more important to him then a plant, he found more beauty in the companionship with the little girl and making her happy then he did with the bonsai tree he had been tending for a long time. 'Monsterbox' is a story that connects well with the audience, teaching us an important life lesson in the process.
